I feel singularly honoured that the opportunity has come my way to chronicle my admiration and affection for Narendra Modi in commemoration of his 70th birth anniversary. The Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy is not an easy subject for one’s literary propensities. And when that Prime Minister also happens to be one’s living hero, the task becomes even more daunting. I had the rare privilege of meeting Modi only once way back in the year 2011 at a breezy press meet within the idyllic confines of a 5 star hotel in Delhi. I gave him my “carte de visite” and exchanged pleasantries with him, albeit fleetingly. I was deeply captivated by his disarming simplicity, serenity and personal charm
The enlightened people of India have whole-heartedly accepted Modi as their supreme leader for two successive terms and are translating into reality his cherished mantra of “Together, for everyone’s growth, with everyone’s trust”. They have summarily rejected the reprehensible parties and individuals who have incredulously questioned the credibility and credentials of our valiant armed forces and have sought to undermine the majesty of our time tested judicial processes and the inviolable independence of our judiciary. Modi has literally taken the wind out of the sails of the grisly extremist, terrorist and separatist forces who unabashedly subserve the interests of nations inimical to our national interests and ignominiously strike at the very roots of the uncompromisable unity and integrity of India. The “surgical strikes” on 29th September, 2016 on terror launch pads inside Pakistan occupied Kashmir and the air strikes on 26th February, 2019 upon secret terror camps in Balakot deep inside Pakistan, carried out with extraordinary speed and stealth, have demonstrated to the entire world that those who sowed the ill wind against India had to reap the most terrible retributory whirlwind! And the indomitable heroism and fighting spirit which our soldiers displayed on 16th June,2020 when unprovokedly attacked by the Chinese Dragon atop the dizzy heights of the Galwan Valley in Ladakh reflected the solid, indestructible resoluteness of our people!
Modi has restored to numerous forgotten but towering Indian political heroes like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, who played a stellar role in our struggle for freedom and economic, social and educational rejuvenation, their rightful place in Indian society by scrupulously adopting and accepting them as national leaders and dedicating roads, museums, statues, postage stamps, coins, memorials and even islands in their honour. And his faith in and commitment to the lofty ideals, thoughts and teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel remains unflinching!
Modi has taken India’s bilateral relations with friendly countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, France, Japan and Saudi Arabia to unfathomable heights and has walked the extra mile to give such relations a new and important depth, dimension and direction. Indo-US relations in particular have witnessed an awesome upsurge that prompted President Donald Trump to effusively salute Modi at the overpacked Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad on 24th February,2020 as “an exceptional leader, a great champion of India, a man who works night and day for his country, and a man I am proud to call my true friend”.
Modi’s invincible ebullient spirit, his delightful sense of humour and his mesmerizing oratorical skills give him a truly monumental character. The Indian people are superbly confident of his unassailable courage and integrity and his tenacious adherence to noble grassroots principles and intense dedication to the path of high endeavour. Apart from spearheading the world’s largest cleanliness mission, Modi has shown a deep and abiding commitment to maintaining global harmony, promoting socio-economic equity and preserving environmental and ecological balance. He has emancipated Muslim women from the scourge of Triple Talaq, has incorporated Jammu and Kashmir into the Indian mainstream and has laid the hallowed foundations of the long awaited Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya. For millions of Indians, he is a mystical personality exuding an aura of mental and physical fitness, whether he is deeply immersed in thought or transfixed in yogic meditation. He is at his best in times of crises, like the debilitating Corona pandemic, a happy warrior immortalised by the prodigious English poet William Wordsworth:
“..who, if he be called upon to face
Some awful moment to which Heaven has joined
Great issues, good or bad for human kind,
Is happy as a Lover; and attired
With sudden brightness, like a Man inspired..”
